A clinical officer attached to Tororo general hospital has been arrested for allegedly conducting an illegal abortion.
Robert Amuka was arrested on Sunday after Leah Mwanjota, 20; a student of Millennium Universal College was admitted to St Anthony hospital in a critical condition on Saturday evening.

Mwanjota a resident of Moshi, Tanzania was allegedly carrying a two-month pregnancy when the abortion that nearly left her dead was procured.

According to Dr. Francis Kasule who operated the victim at St Anthony hospital, the girl’s fallopian tube was ruptured during the illegal process.

‘This girl is lucky because there was blood in the hospital, otherwise she would be a dead person now,’ Kasule told the girl’s relatives.

Amuka was arrested following a formal complaint lodged to police by Lawrence Musinguzi the secretary general of Human life International [HLI], a US based organization spear heading the fight against abortion and artificial birth control methods.
‘We cannot allow this kind of practice to continue anymore, we have lost one life and we shall not allow these girls life to follow’ Musinguzi said.

The organization has so far rescued at least 56 girls and women from abortion from various parts of the country in the past five months of which 20 of them gave birth to healthy bouncing babies.

Misunguzi said the organization’s country director father Jonathan Opio has contacted their heads office in the US and which is considering dispatching a lawyer to come and handle the case.

Speaking with difficulty in her hospital bed, Mwanjota told New Vision that she had insisted not to carry out abortion because of the complication associated with it but Amuka forced her to abort.

‘I remember while in Tororo hospital, he injected me with a drug that made me lose my senses before beginning to press my stomach. Later he took me to the theatre bathroom from where he washed me and hide my clothes that I was putting at the time’ Mwanjota said in her recollection.

She said when she had been expelled from school because of the pregnancy; she had managed to get another school where she would finish her studies with the pregnancy. She said none of her relatives knew of what had happened to her at that time.

The District criminal investigative officer Milton Beigumamu Birungi said Amuka will be charged with procuring abortion as the girl’s condition will be monitored until when she improves.

He said the girl will also be charged with abortion.

A source New Vision talked to confirmed cases of abortion are very common in Tororo hospital but only come out when the life of the girl aborts goes in danger.

Amuka’s arrest comes barely a month when medics at Mbale regional hospital were arrested for negligence after a pregnant mother died when she was not attended to for more than 12 hours since she reported to the hospital.
