GEORGE Odongo dropped 13 points and picked eight crucial rebounds for the Heaters on their way to edging Nkumba Marines 44-43 on a wet Saturday evening at KIU grounds in Kansanga.

Heaters’ coach Brian Wathum lauded Odongo for rising up to the occasion when his team needed him. He converted six of his ten jump-shot attempts, a feat that reminded the crowd of his late brother Wilbrod Oketcho, a Power Basketball Club legend.

“I owe all this to Oketcho (Wilbrod) because he introduced me to the game. I dedicate it to him,” Odongo told New Vision.

Former MVP Oketcho who was born on October 9, 1979 died from a suspected internal blood clot after he was shot on March 12, 2008 and later died on May 14 the same year.

With eight days to what would have been Oketcho’s birthday, Odongo still hopes to emulate his big brother. With this spirit he led the Heaters to their third win in 13 games this season.

Michael Makiadi added eight points and also picked 12 rebounds for Heaters, while Marine’s Danson Ngati scored a team high nine points for the Entebbe based side.

Heaters, who earlier defeated KIU and Ndejje university sides, lie fifth on the standings with 17 points, but have played two games more than most of the other sides.
