It is good Museveni has left Mabira's fate in MPs' hands

EDITOR: I am humbled by Presiden Yoweri Museveni’s new stand on the Mabira forest giveaway. Since the President came up with an idea of giving away part of Mabira, people have been on his neck with different reasons.

Some have attacked him as being autocratic while others have suggested that he has dubious plans. But the meeting between the environmental activists and Museveni about the forest was a positive move. This shows that he is willing to listen to other people’s ideas and proposals about increasing sugar production.

The fact that he has said the forest give away is not an executive order and is subject to parliamentary debate and will be addressed according to the law demonstrates that the president is not a dictator.

It is the parliament’s mandate to determine what is good for this country because MPs are the representatives of the people. It is now clear that Mabira's fate lies in the hands of the legislators. It is only they who can save it or give it away. The President deserves credit for having second thought about the matter and demonstrating that power indeed belongs to the people.

EDITOR: There is constant talk about the 'degraded' part of Mabira forest which President Museveni wants to give away to SCOUL for sugarcane growing. I wish to reiterate that the part which was degraded has recovered.
