Outgoing Kampala Police boss Grace Turyagumanawe yesterday handed over office, but warned that terror threats in the country were real.

Turyagumanawe who is now the acting director of operations, was replaced by Commissioner of Police Andrew Kaweesi.

“The threat of terrorism is real and we must continue with the three pillars of neighborhood watch, security maintenance and sensitisation,” Turyagumanawe said.

The handover took place at the Kampala Central Police station.

Speaking after receiving the instruments of power, Kaweesi reiterated the terror threat and expressed concern over the degree of complacency among the public.

“On Monday, we had a meeting on the same issue. Terrorism is on our door, but nobody cares. People behave as if July 11 never happened,” Kaweesi said.

Terrorists on July 11, 2010 carried out twin bomb attacks in two Kampala suburbs – Kabalagala and Lugogo – killing 76 people and leaving more than 50 others injured.

Al-Qaeda-linked Somalia militia, al-Shabaab claimed responsibility, saying they were retaliating Uganda’s involvement in Somalia.
