UNDER constant watch by specially assigned monitors, lessons have picked up more vividly in most schools in Arua and Moyo districts.

This follows a sluggish beginning of the third term in government-aided primary schools. The schools registered a poor turn-up of teachers and pupils.

Officials said this was usually the trend in most rural schools where the first week used to be wasted.

However, the teachers’ strike, proposed by the Uganda National Teachers Union, was feared to be behind the sluggish beginning.

In some schools in Arua Municipality, teachers stayed in staff rooms, while pupils played in the compounds.

At Arua Hill primary school, the pupils waited quietly in their classrooms as the head teacher, Catherine Dudu, tried to cajole teachers into conducting lessons.

“Yesterday, normal lessons had resumed though some teachers were still reluctant. I can’t force them to teach,” Dudu said.

At Awindiri primary school in Arua, the head teacher, Shem Avua, said the teachers were ready to teach.

In Ejome Primary School in Uriama sub-county and Ajiraku Primary School in Bileafe sub-county in Terego county, teachers conducted lessons normally.

Meanwhile, Moyo district information officer Suzan Akello said the first two days were characterised by pupils going home before 11:00am and teachers showing up in schools leisurely.
