NYAMANDONDO, a suspect of the July 11, 2010 Kampala twin bombings complained that agents of the American Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) tortured him.

Nyamandondo, one of the remaining 12 suspects on trial appeared at the High Court in Kampala, together with his co-accused. Two suspects yesterday pleaded guilty before the trial judge Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo.

Nyamandondo and the others are each facing three charges of terrorism, 76 charges of murder, and 10 charges of attempted murder.

The twin bombs ripped through Kyadondo Rugby Club, and the Ethiopian Village Restaurant, as revellers watched the 2010 FIFA World Cup final.

Yesterday, Nyamandondo’s lawyers, Duncan Ondimu and Francis Onyango, said their client had complained of being beaten on the left eye during interrogations.

Onyango said eye specialists had recommended that Nyamandondo undergoes an immediate operation.

But the lead prosecutor, Joan Kagezi, said the allegations were baseless.

She said Nyamandondo declined to be treated at Luzira Prison, saying he preferred to be taken to Mulago Hospital.

The judge, however, declined to be drawn into the argument and claim that Nyamandondo was tortured.
