UNICEF in partnership with Mulago Hospital and Uganda Telecom yesterday launched an electronic birth and death certificate registration process in Uganda.

Mary Anyabolu, the deputy representative of Unicef in Uganda, said the partnership was to ensure that all estimated 1.5 million births each year are documented in a timely and accurate manner.

She said the partnership was in support of the Uganda registration services bureau

“We expect that by 2012, 80% of the children below five will be registered,” she noted.

Speaking during the launch of Mobile Vital records system at Mulago, the hospital’s executive director, Dr. Baterana Byarugaba, said the short electronic system would help the hospital in planning.

According to the hospital’s data, Mulago registers between 600 and 900 deaths per month. Anthony Oyuko, a Senior state Attorney, said the electronic system would reduce forgery.

“This system will reduce the cost of producing a certificate, the time it takes to issue a certificate and improve the security and authenticity of the records,” he said.
