KAMPALA awoke to a rare sight on Monday — streets dotted with many knocked-up women, all dressed the same. Even funnier was that they hoisted umbrellas above their heads — it was not raining nor was it shining. That was weird.

Turns out the women were not pregnant — it was Crown Beverages’ way of capturing Kampala’s attention just hours ahead of launching MirindaRific SMS, Spin & Win.

This is a syndicated TV game show that, along with entertainment, will give out 36 Toyota Nadias, 12 motor bikes, plasma TV screens, radio systems and fridges, among other prizes. Also, up to sh800m worth of airtime will be won.

So what’s the drill? Just drink a Mirinda Fruity, Mirinda Pineapple, Mirinda Orange, Pepsi, Mountain Dew and 7Up. Under the crown will be a code. Just SMS that code to 6777 and you will enter a weekly draw, for individual consumers.

For bulk buyers, all you have to do is buy three crates or more of the participating brands to get a voucher that carries a special code you will SMS to 7111. This also enters you into a weekly draw.

From the draw, 30 ‘SMSers’ from individual and bulk consumers will be called to a game show on TV every week, where each spins the wheel of fortune, and wins the prize the wheel stops at.

“Every week, three cars and other prizes will be up for grabs. And if some are not won that week, they will be pushed to the coming week, increasing the number of cars and other prizes to be won in that week,” says Aggie Konde, Crown Beverages’ head of sales and marketing.

During the launch, journalists were treated to their own special draw, in which Bukedde TV’s Joseph Ssetimba walked home with a plasma TV set worth sh4m. No one won the car.

Konde said that away from spinning the wheel, a special consideration will be given to the topmost ‘SMSer’ of the week. “That one will not have to spin the wheel. He or she will just have to show up and drive away in a brand new Toyota Nadia.”

The game will be aired live every Wednesday at 8:00pm on local TV stations including Urban TV, Bukedde TV and TV West.

You also will be getting weekly updates about it in your copy of New Vision.
