Prince Edward inspires Ugandan children

Uganda has got an early share of the 2012 London Olympics limelight with the His Royal Highness Prince Edward the Earl of Wessex visiting the country.

Uganda has got an early share of the 2012 London Olympics limelight with the His Royal Highness Prince Edward the Earl of Wessex visiting the country.

Prince Edward launched the International Inspiration, a London 2012 Olympics sports legacy programme aimed at improving lives of over 12 million children in 20 developing countries including Uganda.

“It’s less than a year to the London Olympic Games and Paralympics in Singapore. I am happy to be here to inspire young people to get in sports to improve their lives. Just getting in sports will inspire children and they have got to be encouraged,” Prince Edward said at Kyadondo Rugby ground where he launched the International Inspiration programme in Uganda.

He had earlier he had a braved an afternoon drizzle to lay a wreath on the monument in commemoration of soccer fans who died in July 11, 2011 terrorist bombing at Kyadondo.

The International Inspiration programmer has had 79,000 teachers, coaches and young leaders have been trained to lead sports, physical education and play in their schools and communities by learning new skills.

“The project will be delivered in Uganda in collaboration with Office of the Prime Minister, Ministry of Education and Sports, Ministry of Gender and Social Development and Uganda Olympic Committee,” State minister for sports Charles Bakkabulindi said.

UOC president Roger Ddungu, National Council of Sports general secretary Jasper Aligaweesa, British High Commission staff and Kyadondo Club leadership accompanied Prince Edward at the brief ceremony.
He interacted with children from various parts of the country before departing.
