Tears run freely down her cheeks as she listened to graduands’ names being read out. On hearing hers, she burst into loud sobs as she could not hold it any longer.

Jennipher Kyitibwa, 28, was one of the 73 disadvantaged women who graduated with business skills certificates on Saturday.

“I was overjoyed, that is why I cried tears of joy. I feel I am now a fulfilled woman,” Kyitibwa, a resident of Kyaliwajaala near Namugongo, said as she wiped tears from her face.

The women were trained in computer science, catering, cosmetology and guidance and counselling at Dominion Vocational School in Namugongo, a Kampala suburb free of charge.

Overwhelmed by the achievement, most of the graduands cried loudly or let tears flow freely during the graduation ceremony at Cornerstone Dominion Cathedral International in Namugongo. Kyitibwa hopes to become a leading caterer in her community.

Fatuma Nakkasi, 14, topped her catering class.

“Nakkasi cooked the best rice. The rice was tasty,” remarked her lecturer who is also the principal of Dominion Vacational School, Bishop Dawn Brimah-Willis.

Nakkasi is a student of Kamere Memorial Secondary School.

She was studying with her mother, Fuaza Tafumba, who also could not hold back her tears.

For the women, the graduation was a huge milestone.

“It will help us earn more from our businesses and become independent,” one of them said.
