THREE people were discovered dead in a house in Kisenyi village, Muhorro trading centre in Kibaale district on Saturday morning.

The district officer in charge of criminal investigations, Ben Mugisha, identified the deceased as Molly Nyangoma, 29, and her two sons Kizito Kababa, 5, and Emma Kizito aged one-and-half years, all of Kisenyi.

Fatuma Kemigisa a neighbour, who occupied the room next to the deceased, said she woke up after encountering difficulty in breathing. On switching on her torch, she saw smoke coming from the next room.

“We entered the room through the ceiling and found these people lying on the bed, dead,” she said.

Rashid Akugizibwe, one of the neighbours, said after entering the room they opened the door but it was too late to save the three people.

Akugizibwe said one of the children was still breathing and was rushed to Muhorro Health Centre and later transferred to Kagadi Hospital where he is recuperating from.

One other son identified as Raphael Musoke survived the incident as he was away at his grandmother’s home

“We found a charcoal stove with a pan containing cooking oil and cassava chips almost drying up and we suspect that they could have died from suffocation,” said Akugizibwe.

Nyangoma is reported to have woken up at around 4:00am, lit the charcoal stove and went back to sleep, causing the tragedy, according to the neighbours.

She was preparing the cassava chips to sell on Saturday because it is a market day which is always busy.

The father of the children, also called Kizito Musoke was not at home at the time of the incident.
