HIGHER institutions of learning should design courses that suit society needs if they are to survive the competition in the Education sector, Frederick Kayanja, the Chairperson of the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has said.

He was speaking at the opening of the fifth Uganda Higher Education expo at Lugogo in Kampala last Friday.

NCHE is the national body responsible for setting standards that govern the establishment and operation of higher institutions of learning.

Kayanja advised universities and tertiary institutions to carry out research on job opportunities before they start some courses.

“Higher education should be made accessible. It should not be used for obtaining jobs only. It goes without saying that education is key to assuming positions of responsibility and for attaining professional skills at the work place,”Kayanja added.

He urged the public to enrol for courses in the existing licensed institutions.

Kayanja, however, warned the public against institutions that offer fake academic documents.

He urged the management of institutions of higher learning to operate within the NCHE standards to avoid closure.

The three-day Education expo branded “Higher Education and Job Creation” has attracted over 120 public and private universities, colleges and tertiary institutions in the country.

The expo also aims at finding a solution to unemployment through learning.

Statistics from Uganda’s labour industry reveal that the country still faces a major unemployment problem.

Every year 390,000 students who finish tertiary education have only 8,000 jobs to fight for.

Over 400,000 people enter the labour market every year. Only113,000 are absorbed in the formal sector.
