PRELIMINARY investigations into the death of a mother and her baby in Mbale hospital hint at negligence of the medical personnel, the health ministry said yesterday.
Early this month, Cecilia Nambozo, a pregnant primary school teacher, died in Mbale Hospital after she bled to death while in labour.
This triggered a national outcry amid accusations of negligence of the hospital staff.
A Police report said Nambozo died due to rapturing of the uterus.
Consequently, the Police in Mbale arrested four doctors and two nurses of Mbale Hospital in connection with the death.
The suspects were released on Police bond two days later.
Their file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions who will decide whether they should be charged and what charges they will face.
A statement signed by health minister Christine Ondoa said preliminary findings point to negligence by health workers.
She, however, hastened to caution that investigations were ongoing, but pledged to discipline health workers implicated in the tragedy.
Her remarks were contained in a statement outlining measures to combat maternal deaths and promised tough action.
Ondoa reminded health workers in the country to act professionally, observe medical ethics and code of conduct.
“The ministry is determined to ensure that such preventable deaths are eliminated in health facilities throughout the country,†she said.
