SOME 1,400 secondary schools across Uganda are to be upgraded under the first phase of a World Bank project.
The schools will be renovated and expanded using about sh300b grant to promote secondary education in the country. The funds will be used to construct 4,297 classrooms, 41 administrative blocks, 144 libraries, 405 science rooms, 71 teachers’ houses and 2,296 five-stance latrines, the education ministry said.
About 1,864 classrooms, which were under construction, will be completed, the ministry said in a paper.
All the schools under the project will receive science kits and chemical reagents and 1.7 million textbooks for the seven core subjects.
Schools to be renovated include Kisubi College, Trinity College Nabbingo, Kibuli SS, Ndejje SS, Masaka SS, Mityana SS, Katende SS, Lango College, Sacred Heart Gulu Girls’ SS, Nyakasura School, Ntare School, Muntuyera High School and Iganga SS.
Apart from secondary schools, 45 business and vocational institutions and five national teachers’ colleges will be also expanded.
Since the number of candidates sitting for national examinations is shooting up, the education ministry plans to procure a printer and more computers for Uganda National Examinations Board.
The funds will also be used to review the secondary education curriculum.
The project will be implemented over a 10-year period in three phases.
