WORLD 3000m steeplechase champion Dorcus Inzikuru has joined a class of famous and ‘rich’ Ugandan sports personalities.
Inzikuru who earned $60,000 in Helsinki on Monday, is ranked sixth in a survey by The New Vision that focused on soccer players transfer fees, and earnings from single fights and races.
The list for one day’s work, is topped by Magid Musisi, signed for $130,000 from SC Villa by French side Rennes, is second for his close to $1m (sh1.7bn) move from Bursaspor in Turkey to Dardanelspor.
Former World Boxing Council (WBC) light middleweight champion John ‘The Beast’ Mugabi who pocketed close to $1m (sh1.7bn) after fighting Marvin Hagler in 1986, is rated second. Mugabi is now said to be a ‘pauper’ in Australia.
Former IBF champion Kassim ‘The Dream’ Ouma got $250,000 after fighting Russian Roman ‘Made in Hell’ Karmazin.
Godfrey Nyakana earned $125,000 in his WBU contest with Verno Phillips while Davis Kamoga won $40,000 for his silver medal at the 1997 worlds.
Express star David Obua is said to have moved to Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa for a fee of $10,000.
Up to 50% of the money earned however goes to the sportsmen’s management teams and taxes and Inzikuru will also yield up to 40% she earned.
