EDITOR—Last week, the UCE results for 2009 were released and there is a slight improvement compared to the previous year. This was good but in the rural areas the performance is still poor.
It does not make sense when only a few students pass while the majority fail. The Government must work harder to improve academic standards in rural areas. This can be done by supplying science equipment, text books and monitoring the schools’ performance on a regular basis.
If the Government wants to promote sciences, more science teachers must be trained. In many rural schools there are hardly any science teachers and as a result sciences are done very poorly.
