Mpigi district will return the land in Mpigi counties to Buganda kingdom, the chairman has vowed.
Badru Kabega Mukalazi, while being sworn in as LC5 chairman by Chief Magistrate Cohen Okulu, on Monday said he would work hard to return the land in Butambala, Gomba and Mawokota to the rightful owners.
He was sworn in with over 20 local councillors at the district headquarters.
Kabega pledged to work towards improving the relationship between Mpigi district and the Mengo administration.
He said there was great need to uplift the education system, water supply and programmes to alleviate poverty in the district.
“Many children and women still move long distances to fetch water and most times this water is not clean and safe. I pledge to bring clean and safe water to every body,” he said.
Mpigi area MP Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire (left) urged leaders to unite and enhance development.
“We are all one, there should be no reason for us to be divided because of multiparty politics,” Bitamazire said.
Chief Administrative Officer Henry Makumbi urged the new councillors to be exemplary and educate the residents in how they can participate in government programmes.
“We as leaders are the mouthpiece of the people we represent at various levels. Not listening to and teaching them is denying them their right,” Makumbi said.
He said poverty, mortality rates, malaria, poor sanitation and hygiene were still rampant in Mpigi district and solutions had to be put in place.
