Bwambale calls for election laws

LAWS to regulate elections should be formulated a year ahead of the exercise, Kasese district MP Loice Biira Bwambale has said.
“We realise that election laws are formulated six months to elections.
“This does not enable MPs and the electorate to read, understand, research and compare the laws with other countries having the same system of governance,” Bwambale told the press at Parliament on Tuesday.
Bwambale was among the 11-member observer team of the African Union for the national elections of Mauritius on July 3.
In Mauritius, voter registers are updated and verified 10 months before elections, unlike in Uganda where they are updated any time, she said.
“To have free and fair elections in 2006, the Electoral Commission should be well-facilitated,” she said, adding that the team observed free and fair elections in Mauritius.
