UNAA raps citizenship law

Publication date: Tuesday, 1st December, 2009

THE Uganda North American Association (UNAA) president has said the dual citizenship law is insufficient and will not serve the diverse interests of Ugandans in the diaspora.

“We find the Bill inadequate. It addresses only 20% of the diasporas,” Moses Wilson, said.

He told journalists in Kampala last week that his organisation would prepare a formal position to present to the Government to improve the Bill.

The dual citizenship Bill was approved by the Cabinet in mid 2008 and passed by Parliament mid this year. Wilson said most Ugandans in the diaspora gave up their citizenship to settle in North America.

He explained that they included people like himself, who left Uganda over 20 years ago while fleeing from the dictatorial rule of Idi Amin. There are about 100,000 Ugandans leaving in North America (the US and Canada).
