OWNERS of the vehicles impounded in “Operation Umoja” on stolen vehicles might be called to record statements with the Police, the director of CID, Elizabeth Kutesa, said yesterday.
This contradicts what she said earlier on Wednesday, that the operation would not target car owners.
In a twist of events, however, she said, “We are sure some vehicles recovered during this operation were robbed at gunpoint and their owners killed in the process. We shall liaise with Interpol for records regarding such cases and summon people who bought the vehicles.”
She added, “These people will not necessarily be arrested but will help the Police in investigations.”
Police seized 127 vehicles in a three-day joint operation conducted by Interpol and Uganda Police. Fifty-two vehicles were confirmed stolen from Japan, the UK and South Africa.
Kutesa said three guns and an unspecified number of bullets were also recovered during the operation that was earlier conducted in Kenya and Tanzania.
“The Police arrested the person got with the guns,” Kutesa said.
She declined to name the suspect.
