The Minister for East African Affairs, Eriya Kategaya, 62, officially married Diana Mujugo in a low-key traditional ceremony on Saturday.

Kategaya, who is also the first Deputy Prime Minister, was given his new wife, a daughter of the late Stephen Mujugo of Kashari County in Mbarara district, after handing over the bride price of 10 head of cattle.

The ceremony took place at Katagaya’s home in Karagwe Cell, Itojo sub-county in Ngungamo district.

Kategaya, who was in high spirits, said he was now officially going to enjoy his new marriage. Kategaya separated with his first wife, Joan, several years ago.

“Clearing the bride price has given me comfort in my marriage with my new wife Diana. I am now going to sleep without any worry,” the groom said. He assured his in-laws that he would never divorce her.

Diana introduced Kategaya at her late fathers’ home in December last year.

The two have been staying together since. They have a baby boy, Kategaya Junior, aged six months.

Apollo Mabati, Diana’s uncle, said his friendship with Kategaya started back in the 1980s when they were living together in Nganwa Hostel in Mbarara town. The marriage, he added, would only strengthen their friendship.

Prominent personalities, including former secretary general of the East African Community Amanya Mushega, attended the party.

A delegation of Diana’s relatives left in the evening in a Fuso truck loaded with the 10 head of cattle.

Kategaya’s family continued to party until late in the night.
