THE Busia-based New Hope Orphanage is to take care of four children whose family was ravaged by jiggers.

Aged between one and six, the children were recently admitted to Kakira Health Centre in Jinja district together with their father, John Kapere, 60, of Kakira sub-county.

Officials of New Hope received the children Esther Kawudha, 6, James Balidawa, 3, Elizabeth Nabwonso, 2 and one-year-old Florence Aidha from the LC 3 chairman, John Kamau last week.

Ken Daniel Mulago, the head of the organisation, commended The New Vision for revealing the plight of the children on June 19.

“The story was so touching. We felt that the affected children needed an opportunity to be cared for and long-term assistance rather than depending on handouts from well-wishers.”

He added that since the children were malnourished, they would be put on a special diet and would be given clothes, shoes and beddings.

“As soon as they gain strength, we shall take them to school and this will mark the beginning of their long journey to success.”

Meanwhile, the sub-county probation and welfare officer, Paul Ndobooli, said Kapere was still being rehabilitated at the health centre.

He said they would ensure that sanitation at Kapere’s home is improved.
