Did he infect me with HIV?

I had sex for the first time recently. He first put part of his penis in without a condom. Then he put on a condom. When we finished, he started joking about having HIV. He scared me. What should I do?

Dear Juliet,
Most likely you do not need to worry because he did not ejaculate in you without the condom. One does not get HIV from touching the penis.But, one should never joke about having HIV. Before you sleep with him again (if you ever), do an HIV test with him so that you know his status.

If your partner has HIV and you have unprotected sex, you can get Post Exposure Prophylaxis. These are drugs to prevent HIV infection after exposure. You start taking them within 72 hours of the sex and take them for a month. Talk to a doctor about them.

And, Juliet, please make sure you are confident of any partner before you sleep with him. Discuss your HIV status, and what you are going to do to prevent it. It reduces your worries after having sex.
