An art piece of a taxi park done by Kateregga

An art piece of a taxi park done by Kateregga

By Dominic Muwanguzi

ISMAIL Kateregga is a contemporary artist who paints about day-to-day lifestyle — from boda-boda cyclists to fishing and wildlife.

He uses his diverse exposure to convey his message through oil, acrylics and egg tempera. Kateregga says his interest in the routine lifestyle is influenced by his philosophy of living life as it comes and seeing people living.
In most of his paintings about wildlife, the giraffe is a recurring image.

“Giraffes are beautiful and a symbol of a peaceful community,” he says.
Kateregga criticises artists who over-commercialise their work, saying the message is more essential.

However, he does not seem to walk the talk. In an ongoing exhibition at Tulifanya Gallery, Kateregga seems to have hand-picked particular paintings with intent to sale rather than pass on a message to his audience. The exhibition will run until February 19.
