  • Collaborative teaching is the way to go
Most schools that register excellent academic performance cite collaborative teaching as one of their success secrets. Although the primary education syllabus confines collaborative teaching to lower primary, it can be adopted at any educational level.

Skeptics cite high enrolment as a challenge in UPE classrooms. Collaborative teaching is an effective strategy which schools with high pupil to teacher ratio could adopt to improve teacher- pupil interaction. In the context of UPE and USE, collaborative teaching is an affordable and immediate way the education ministry can use to improve quality using the same facilities.

Teachers need to view collaborative teaching as an avenue for professional growth that enables teachers to learn from each other. It taps on the diversity and unique talents each teacher has. If well adopted, collaborative teaching can help improve performance through collaborative scheming of work, planning, lesson delivery and evaluation of pupils.

Like any other professional skill, effective collaborative teaching doesn’t come naturally. Teachers need refresher courses to improve their classroom techniques. The teacher educators need to consider integrating collaborative approach into the teacher training curriculum.
