Ask the doctor with Dr. Gloria Ndagire
Dear Doctor,
I have had ringworms for the last three years. I have tried to treat the infection but it recurs after some time. I have used several tubes and I do not know what to do next. I need to find a solution to this problem since I am getting married in two months’ time.
Sam
Dear Sam,
RINGWORMS are caused by a fungus known as ptyriasis versicolor. It is one of the most common fungal skin infections. The infection can be recurrent and sometimes difficult to eliminate.
It is usually acquired through contact with personal clothing belonging to an infected person. It can also be acquired from communal facilities such as towels used in the gym.
Most chronic sufferers usually get reinfected from their own clothing. In these cases a lot of attention needs to be paid to personal hygiene that is proper ironing and washing of garments to eliminate the fungi.
In addition, a combination of both oral and topical antifungal medication is likely to produce better results in this case.
Get a prescription from a health facility.
I do understand your desire to get well before you start sharing your life with your fiancee.
However, the infection may take a few weeks to disappear but I am sure your partner will understand.
Goodluck.
