COMPETITORS in the KCB Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally will have to part with at least $1200 (sh2.4m) for each crew to purchase HANS devices to enhance their safety.

Clerk of course Stephen Byaruhanga has advised competitors to acquire Head and Neck Support (HANS) devices in time for the rally slated for April 30-May 2.

“HANS device is a must especially for those competing for FIA points. And it’s highly recommended that all competitors use it in all races. If the car rolls the neck remains safe,” Byaruhanga stated, adding that FIA recommended its use several years ago.

“It’s very important for our people to appreciate the sport they are in and take the necessary precautions. The route is going to be fast and I would urge them to go for those speeds they can comfortably handle.”

The purpose of the device is to stop the head from whipping forward in a crash, without restricting movement of the neck.

In the previous edition of the Pearl rally, Uganda ace driver Riyaz Kurji died in a crash while his navigator Sayed Kadri sustained injuries. The rally is the third round of the Africa Rally Championship.
