ANDRINA Namata and Mercy Tabitha underlined their beach volleyball supremacy by winning the first round of the women Club National championship at Lido beach, Sunday.
The two were again at their best stopping the Kenyan pair of Yelena Juma and Julia Sakaya 21-18 in a tightly contested one set final that ended after sunset.
It was the third time the two pairs were meeting in a final after clashing in the national open and the fourth leg of the 2009 circuit. “It wasn’t easy because all our opponents were good but we were better. It’s a good feeling to be in line to represent the country once again,†Thabita said after the final.
Enroute to the final, the victors had stopped the ambitious pair of Viviane Aketch and Viola Akisa 21-11 in the semi-final, while top seeds Diana Agaba and Mariam Nakamanya fell to the Kenyan pair at the same stage 21-18.
The men’s category produced new winners with 2009 Volleyballer of the Year Emma Kato combining with Richard Tamale for a 21-16 19-21 16-14 hard fought victory over Deo Nsereko and Henry Bbaale.
The winning pair had won all their preliminary games and positioned themselves for possible selection on the national team for the Zone 5 World Cup qualifiers as well as the full qualifiers that Uganda are vying to host.
