Cranes eager to confront Burundi

  • FUFA is leaving nothing to chance in Uganda’s Africa nations Championship match return leg against Burundi, reports James Bakama.

    The Cranes, who returned at 8pm last night from Bujumbura, will have only two days rest before their March 28 return leg against Burundi’s Sparrows.

    Uganda Cranes scored a crucial goal after drawing away with Burundi Sparrows. any win will have the Cranes advancing to the next stage where they will face Kenya

    “They’ll return to camp this week,” said FUFa official Haruna Kyobe shortly after the Cranes landed at Kanombe airport yesterday.

    The team was initially scheduled to leave Bujumbura at 5.30pm and get to Entebbe at 9pm but the departure was brought forward by three hours. The continental competition offers coach Bobby Williamson a priceless opportunity to start preparing a team for the 2012 nations Cup qualifiers that kick-off in September.

    The African nations Championship, also referred to as African Championship of nations or CHan, is a football tournament which was introduced in 2007.

    It excludes foreign based players of the respective national sides. The tournament’s inaugural edition was in 2009. Ivory Coast hosted the inaugural finals tournament that was won by the DR Congo.

    Uganda is out to improve on its performance in the maiden edition where they were ejected by Tanzania 3-1 on aggregate in the first round. The Cranes that year beat Eritrea 5-2 in the preliminaries.
