IVAN Enabu has made a dramatic U-turn that will see him stay with the UCU Canons for the upcoming FUBA league season. The player had originally agreed to join the Mountain Dew Falcons.
“I have unfinished business with UCU because I promised myself that I will win a championship while at the club,†said Enabu.
The star point guard signed a two-year contract with the Falcons last month believed to be worth sh50m and spoke of his eagerness about joining the record national men’s champions.
Enabu had made the switch because he believed this year the Falcons can win the championship.
His change of direction will come as a huge surprise considering the Falcons transfer received massive media coverage.
Observers believe Enabu’s turnaround has been precipitated by, among other factors, the early exit of Steven Omony. The player had signed a sh72m two-year contract with the Falcons but backed out just after one year citing breach of contract by the employers. He claimed by the time he walked out he was demanding over sh40m.
On the other hand, UCU has strengthened their ranks with a string of impressive signings coupled with the potentially critical return of former captain Geoffrey Omondi. Enabu could see this as chance to win the championship at the Mukono-based side.
When Falcons patron John Ssimbwa was contacted he said he was not aware of the new developments.
Enabu joined UCU in 2007 and led the team to the play-offs twice, losing to Falcons and Power respectively.
Meanwhile, Makerere Sparks have been hit by the departure of more than ten key players.
Among those is Sandra Munduru who has moved to A-1 Challenge, Lynn Nalunkuuma (UCU) as Joselyn Keko and Sara Nassuna are linked with moves to Magic Stormers and KIU Rangers respectively.
Winning the league in 2003 was the last time the Sparks put up a brave fight but have since then fallen short of the play-offs bracket finishing fifth for the last six years.
