SOFAPAKA FC, a club that was formed in 2004 to carter for street children in Nairobi entered into history books at the weekend when they became the first team to clinch the Kenya Premier League title in their maiden year.

Owned by a Congolese businessman Elly Mboni Kalekwa, the club achieved their feat with one match in hand after beating Red Berets 3-0 to clinch the trophy and Ksh3m (Ush75m) cash prize.

Sofapaka will now carry Kenya’s flag to next year’s CAF Champions League that was lifted at the weekend by Congolese club TP Mazembe.

AFC Leopards, who won the knockout competition will feature in the CAF Confederations Cup. The club that re-entered top flight football this year after being relegated, survived the big chop by the skin of their teeth when they held Sony Sugar FC to a goalless draw on Sunday.

The 18-team league will see two teams dropped and the same number promoted.

Agro-Chemicals are already assured of relegation with either Red Berets or Bandari joining them. Already Mahakama FC and Posta Rangers have joined the Premier League.

Outgoing champions, Mathare United are batttling for second place. They need to win their last game to be assured of the slot at the expense of Thika United who are two points adrift but also with a game to play.
