The average wholesale price for agricultural commodities increased by 48% between June 2009 and June 2010, a research conducted by a local agricultural price movement watchdog, Info-trade Uganda, has shown.
Infotrade is Uganda’s leading agricultural market information provider. According to Robert Kintu, the managing director, commodity prices were expected to continue the upward trend.
He noted that every year, there are less agricultural commodities sold locally, but the population is rising. “Agricultural production is very costly in Uganda. People don’t look at the product or input cost. You cannot produce a kilogramme of maize grain at sh200 and sell it at sh220. That does not make business sense,†Kintu added.
