KAYONDO and Okello were friends working as designers of an education magazine in town. They were also the only permanent workers at the magazine. Besides, laying and designing the pages, they acted as editors.
When the magazine had just started, they didn’t mind getting little pay. However, when the magazine’s sales went up and it became a weekly, they became impatient. Their boss never talked about increasing their salaries.
After discussing th issue among themselves, they decided to talk to the boss.
They substantially gave their reasons for a pay rise, marking how the magazine had improved and the amount of work they did.
“The workload has increased and so has the number of advertisers. We work late hours and sometimes on weekends,†they told the ‘big man’.
They proposed they start getting paid for the extra hours “since our appointment letters necessitate us to produce the magazine twice monthly.â€
The boss promised he would consider their arguments and get back to them during at an appropriate time.
After two weeks, Okello and Kayondo were called in the boss’ office were given their new appointment letters with a huge salary increase. They were also to get weekend and night allowances on top of that.
They advise workers to use the right channels in pursuit of better pay.
