The cost of coffins in Bududa district has risen by 100% in the last three weeks following the landslides that killed over 350 people.According to David Wesonga a carpenter at Bukalasi trading centre, a coffin is sh200,000, up from sh100,000 before the tragedy.
“We have been selling one to two coffins in a month at over sh80,000, but now the situation has forced us to increase the prices.
“Timber is scarce in the region because the Uganda Wildlife Authority does not allow us to harvest timber from the forest reserve. This has also forced us to increase our rates,†Wesonga explained.
