Uganda is supporting regional initiatives to rid the country of being e-landlocked, Uganda’s permanent representative to the World Trade Organisation, ambassador Kweronda Ruhemba, has said.

Ruhemba was representing President Yoweri Museveni at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Tunisia last week.

He said being e-landlocked had limited Uganda’s access to the global information society.

Ruhemba asked development partners to support the regional initiative to lay a submarine fiber optics system for Eastern and Southern Africa (EASSY Project), which will lower communications costs with the world.

The summit attracted more than 16,000 participants from 176 countries. Uganda had 35 participants.
