Who knew the girl’s plight?

EDITOR—Thanks to Karooro Okurut for sharing the plight of the 14-year-old girl from Bushenyi, accused of killing her would-be defiler. Karooro is one of the best writers in Uganda and is most effective, at least in my opinion, when her topics are social rather than political.

Assuming the girl’s story to be true, there are a few dots that need to be connected. If she is indeed “born-again”, then she could not have been as lonely and isolated as we are made to believe, since born- agains are usually part of a larger group.

If she was indeed a candidate for confirmation, as reported, she would have had to spend several Sundays with a larger group, as the local priest prepared them for confirmation.

I have three questions. Who knew about the girl’s plight, when did they know it, and what did they do about it? If we all became our children’s keepers, crimes against children would end.
