Taxis are a huge death trap

  • SIR — Taxis in Uganda are meant to provide an efficient and safe mode of transport but this is not the case anymore. Taxis have, over the years, earned themselves the title of death traps. The drivers are a nuisance; chewing ganja, talking on mobile phones while driving and having no drivers’ licences.

Taking a ride in a taxi means trading one’s comfort and safety since most of them are not road worthy and pack passengers like sardines.

All these problems bring a variety of risks to passengers, besides the risk of contracting tuberculosis (TB).

A relative of mine, on his way to Luwero, got TB as a result of sitting next to a TB patient in the taxi.

The traffic police, UTODA, road safety council and the health ministry should work together and analyse all the risks taxis pose to unsuspecting passengers and come up with solutions.

This time, the Police should seriously enforce what will be agreed on. All public transport vehicles are supposed to have speed governors and seat belts. This would help issues but it has not been enforced.

The collaboration of all stakeholders will ensure that all the issues are dealt with and everyone is doing what they should be.
