THE Democratic Party (DP) candidate in Mukono North byelections, Betty Nambooze, has promised vendors in Nama sub-county that she will ensure that their licence fees and taxes are cut down once she joins Parliament.
Speaking to the vendors at Namawojolo roadside market on Tuesday, Nambooze said: “When I look at your shops and stalls I don’t see anyone who is fit to pay the taxes you are paying. I will make sure that those taxes are reduced.â€
She said the vendors paid huge taxes because the Rev. Peter Bakaluba Mukasa did not effectively represent them in Parliament.
“In Kampala Central, where Erias Lukwago has effectively represented his people, vendors pay smaller taxes yet they earn more than you,†Nambooze said.
She asked the vendors to vote for her on May 25 because she is the only one among the candidates, who has worked in the market before.
“I was a vendor for several years when I was a child. I know what you go through to earn a living,†she said.
Nambooze was accompanied to the rally by former CBS Radio presenters, who included Moses Kasibante and DP leaders from Mukono. Kasibante asked the vendors to vote for Nambooze because she had the potential to advocate for the re-opening of CBS.
Nambooze started her campaigns last weekend in Nama sub-county, where Bakaluba has a big following.
Nambooze’s supporters sang and danced to songs praising her, DP and Dr. Kizza Besigye, the president of the Forum for Democratic Change.
