HUNDREDS of Anglicans yesterday thronged All Saints Church in Kampala to pay their last respects to the late Rev. Canon Simon Peter Kigozi, who died last Sunday.
Kigozi, 95, was born at Makerere to the late Jonah Gyagenda and Martha Nabisere.
He served for 30 years in the Church of Uganda as the Sunday school and youth organiser, and at All-Saints Church as Canon Missioner and the Archdeacon of Kampala Diocese. He was also a member of the East African Revival Ministries.
Kigozi’s accolade also includes the daily Bible reading guide in Luganda, Kisumuluzo, which he wrote in the 1970s.
In the 1940s, Kigozi was at the centre of controversy when he married Buganda Queen Mother Irene Namaganda after the death of King Daudi Chwa.
In their condolence messages, Prime Minister Apolo Nsibambi, and the Parliament Speaker, Edward Ssekandi, described Kigozi as a family man, who promoted good relations and charity in communities.
Retired bishop Livingstone Nkoyooyo, said Kigozi was “a father of all, who loved his culture yet never entertained sectarianismâ€.
Kigozi is survived by a wife, Erina Kigozi, five children and 20 grand-children. He will be buried today at Ngogwe in Lugazi, Mukono district.
