HUNDREDS of guests turned up to celebrate the 100th birthday of Anna Maria Nambi, of Kabuwoko village in Kalungu, Masaka district on Sunday.
Nambi is the maternal aunt of the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Ssekandi.
Addressing her guests, Nambi, whose only problem is hearing, was stunned with the high turn-up at the function.
She said she treasures her Kiganda culture and the Catholic faith.
Born to Boniface Katende and Veronica Buuzaatakukiine on March 4, 1910 in Kitabazi Villa-Maria, Nambi attended Villa-Maria Primary School and Bwanda Novitiate until 1931.
She was married to Kamya but never had biological children. Nambi, however, helped bring up her late sister Mary Anthony Nababi’s children who include Anna Nabukeera and Florence Nambi Ssemmanda.
She has grandchildren who are Catholic priests, nuns and brothers while others are married.
Nambi prayed to God to grant more years to her grandchildren, whom she said have helped her live a positive life.
Ssekandi, who attended the function, called on leaders to protect the lives of citizens by upholding love and fraternal relations among communities.
He said it is the role of family, political and religious leaders to safeguard citizens against inhuman acts like child sacrifice.
Ssekandi, who is also the MP for Bukoto central in Masaka, commended his aunt for promoting the culture of family and patriotism.
