PROF. Venansius Baryamureeba, the acting Makerere University vice-chancellor, has called on accountants to be ethical.
“Accountants should desist from acting unethically because someone else is. At the end of the day, each one is responsible for their actions,†he said.
Baryamureeba stressed that honesty and transparency were vital for professional growth.
He issued the counsel on Monday while officiating at the release of the December examination results for the Institute of Certified Public Accountants at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.
Baryamureeba encouraged accountants to embrace information communication technology, saying it would enable them manage systems better.
“Gone are the days when accountants could not use computers.â€Â
He also commended the institute for incorporating information technology modules in the accounting subjects.
The vice-chancellor advised accountants to be innovative.
He noted that accounting was important for economic development, adding that the professionals guide managers on accounting issues.
Baryamureeba promised to allow the institute’s students access the ICT lab facilities at Makerere University.
He also advised accountants not to measure their success by the money they get for their services, saying achievements come after diligent service and hard work.
A total of 3,265 students sat for the examinations.
