RELIEF: Cardinal Wamala hands over keys to Mwanje as Sciannameo looks on

By Flavia Nakagwa

PRISONS should not be looked at as punishment areas but more of rehabilitation centres, Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala has said.

Speaking at the opening of a day care centre for children of inmate mothers at the Women’s prison in Luzira, Wamala commended the prison authorities for making the prison more of a correctional centre than a punishment centre. The centre was co-founded by Elena Damiani of Gemma house in Italy and Fr. Alex sciannameo, president of the Family of Africa NGO at Bbiina, Mutungo.
Wamala asked the government to improve conditions in the prisons and treat all inmates equally.

The Rotary Club of Port Bell put up playing materials for the children in the day centre playground.
The deputy commissioner of prisons, James Mwanje, said he was grateful for the boost.
