The UPDF court martial in Hima on Tuesday sentenced 12 soldiers to imprisonment over a number of cases. The cases included neglect and interference with legal custody, failure to execute duties, failure to protect war materials, consuming and possessing drugs, alcoholism and assault.

The court, chaired by Major Medi Baguma, convicted Private Steven Okot, 34, to 10 years in prison over desertion and involvement in criminal activities. Private Ayebazibwe David was also sentenced to seven years imprisonment after he was found guilty of criminal acts.

Others sentenced between five and 10 years included privates Komunda Kukunda, 31, Mubarak Birigyi, 27, and Alex Rogers Tumushabirane, 25. The court also dismissed two officers after they were found guilty of drug abuse, assault and failure to execute their duties. They included Private Edward Manyirangwa, 29 and Private Steven Omwala.

Addressing journalists, the UPDF Rwenzori region spokesperson, Lt. Ninsima Rwemishuma, urged the public to report army deserters in their areas.

He said the deserters are responsible for the increasing crime in communities.
