A total of 548 students have been awarded degrees and diplomas in various disciplines at Bishop Stuart University in Mbarara. The graduands at the Friday ceremony, the 4th since the opening of the university, included 224 women and 324 men.

Officiating at the ceremony, the chancellor, the Rt. Rev. George Tibesigwa, appealed to the local government to exempt the university from property tax.

He explained that the university buildings were not for profit making. Tibesigwa said educational institutions were contributing to the social and economic development by providing services to the population.

Bishop Stuart is an affiliate of the Uganda Christian University Mukono (UCU), which produced the last batch of 367 graduands at the ceremony.

Tibesigwa thanked UCU for nurturing Stuart into a strong institution. Prof. Jossy Bibangambah, the vice-chancellor, said the university was established in a difficult environment.

Radio West’s deputy programmes manager Rose Kuribakanya and news reader Dothan Kabatweriire received degrees in Development Studies and Business Administration.

UCU vice-chancellor the Rev. Stephen Noll and Mbarara municipality mayor Wilson Tumwine attended the ceremony.
