THE Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party is to reserve 60% of its leadership positions for the youth. The party president, Maama Miria Kalule Obote, told youthful supporters of the party in Bushenyi that the decision was taken by party’s national executive committee.

“Your time has come. This is the moment for you to unite and take an active role in the management of party affairs,” Miria declared on Saturday at Hot Springs Hotel in Bushenyi district.

She urged the youth from the western region to massively recruit new members into the party.

Accompanied by her son James Akena, who doubles as Lira Municipality MP, Miria revealed that her late husband, Apollo Milton Obote, had a soft spot for the youth.

“Whereas the elders had to make appointments to meet him, the youth had full-time time access to him anytime and anywhere.”

She appealed to political parties and other stakeholders to educate voters, saying the electoral commission had failed.

“The principles of democracy can only apply where you have an enlightened group of voters who know their rights and responsibilities when they exercise their obligations.”
