OVER 2,000 people living around Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale district have received swimming lessons. Bushara Island Camp took up the initiative to reduce the number of deaths on the lake.
Lake Bunyonyi is the second deepest lake in Africa but it has poor water transport facilities and the majority of the people use locally-made boats.
The manager, Patrick Tumwijukye, on Saturday said free swimming lessons had greatly benefited teachers and students.
Tumwijukye made the remarks at the commissioning of a community multi-purpose hall worth sh52m at Bushara camp.
The secretary in charge of projects at the British High Commission, John Hamilton, commissioned the hall. The commission injected sh32m into the project.
The director of Bunyonyi Overland Resort, Ivan Batuma, appealed to the Government to rehabilitate the Kabale- Bunyonyi road.
Batuma said the appalling condition of the road is a hindrance to tourism at Bunyonyi.
The lake is endowed with 29 Islands and natural beauty, making it a destination for tourists.
