The Soroti local government has set up a scholarship scheme for students who excel in Biology and Chemistry subjects, the district speaker, Joseph Opio Osoto, has said.

Osoto said the scheme would start this year with the best students in last year’s S.6 results being the first beneficiaries. He said the selected students would do courses in medicine and nursing.

He said medical practitioners were few, forcing people to go to unqualified nurses for treatment. Osoto cited a boy in Gweri sub-county who had become disabled because the nurse administered a wrong dosage of quinine injection. He called on those whose children excelled well in biology and chemistry to register with the district.
