The Office of the Prime Minister has begun clearing land for the vulnerable households ahead of the planting season in Moroto and Kotido districts.
About 400 acres of land will be ploughed and planted with crops under the food security scheme.
Moroto LC5 chairperson, Peter Ken Lochap, on Friday encouraged communities to begin cultivating so as to avert the food crisis in their areas.
“The rains have come, therefore, we should take advantage and plant crops,†he said.
“We must help the Government to move away from supplying relief to Karimojongs all year round.â€
Lochap explained that the Government had started projects that can sustain food security in the region.
Recently, the Government launched a sh25b action plan in Moroto district to address food shortages.
The plan aims at increasing food harvest and stocking two animals in every household.
Kotido LC5 vice-chairperson Grace Oyugi said the district will plough 66 acres in every sub-county.
She appealed to the Government to provide food relief to sustain the people as they prepare their gardens.
Last year, a similar exercise was conducted in the region but drought destroyed the crops before they matured.
