MTN Kampala marathon hits 6000 mark

THE MTN Kampala International marathon has been overwhelmed by the numbers registering for the event and might consider cutting short the exercise.

The event is 9000 runners short of hitting the maximum number of 15,000 competitors after 6000 people registered in five days. Registration deadline for the November 22 event is next Monday.

“This does not include corporates who register runners in bulk. We are closely monitoring the numbers and if we reach the target before the deadline, we will have to close because of logistics,” said Aggrey Kagonyera, MTN promotion and marketing manager.

Kagonyera explained that they have already placed an order for running vests, chips and other requirement s to cater for the targeted 15,000 runners. He ruled out the possibility of revising the order.

“Our target is 15,000 people and that is what we are planning for. The moment it reaches that, we close the registration counters. Late registrations will not be tolerated. There is a big problem with people wanting to register late,” he said.

Last year the registration exercise was extended by five days but was abruptly closed within one day after exceeding the targeted 11,000 runners by 200.
Elite athletes Dorcus Inzikuru, Martin Toroitich, Moses Kibet and Stephen Kiprotich have confirmed their participation.
