THE Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) presidential candidate has promised to ban wheat exports to Kenya. She said the ban would ensure the low local wheat output meets domestic demands, writes Rashid Muzungyo.
Miria Kalule Obote told a rally at Kapchorwa Boma Grounds on Wednesday that her government would provide combine harvesters to step up wheat production in Kapchorwa and Bukwo districts.
She said her government would restrict export of wheat from the two districts through provision of reliable prices and markets to the farmers.
There are no available statistics on wheat crop production at the moment but district authorities estimate it at 12,000 tonnes annually.
Mrs. Obote promised that her government would provide combine harvesters through a micro-finance credit scheme. She also pledged to revive cooperatives.
